The tomatoes are going gangbusters. I have them sitting in the south basement window. They are an average of 4 inches tall! The most robust are the Black Prince: thicker stems and straight-up growth. Sadly, my favorites, the Cherokee purple, are the weakest stemmed, leaning over in several cases. I am waiting to see what happens as the days lengthen and the air temperature warms up. Relying on the heat mat and the benevolence of the sun is like taking an electric blanket to the beach in December.
The annuals are terrible…I probably expect too much, and parking them next to the tomatoes just points out their puny growth so far. The snapdragon seedlings are doing the best with leaves about a quarter inch. The petunias look hopelessly small. While the Miracle-Gro trays started out pretty well, they haven’t maintained the growth they put out at first, and the Jiffy seed trays look just plain pathetic.
