I ran out of the garlic-smelling Deer and Rabbit Repellent from Sweeney, so I switched up. I purchased Havahart “Deer-Off” which is supposed to repel deer, rabbits and squirrels for “up to 3 months” and be weather-proof. So far, that is not the case. The midnight raiders have eaten the tops off of the Asiatic lilies, munched the holly hocks, day lilies, petunias, callirhoe, and Missouri primrose in spite of the spray. I am going to have to try another deterrent, although the fact that I spent nearly $17 on the Deer-Off makes irritates me.
I managed to have the camera with me today when I caught the woodpecker hanging out on the tree in the backyard.
Here are the photos:
Here are some pictures of the damage done by the woodpecker to the ponderosa pine in the backyard.
So, the Irritape didn’t exactly work. I caught that little devil tapping two feet above the flapping tape. And, the Minion has informed me that it is a Downy woodpecker, not a Hairy woodpecker. I shooed, shouted, and threw more pinecones. The next step was to visit the Wild Bird Center to seek expert advice. Surprisingly, they weren’t exceedingly helpful. The nice man behind the counter suggested I find out what was wrong with the tree; bugs were probably what was attracting the woodpecker’s attention. Anyway, hanging pie plates from every branch was the consensus of everyone in the bird store. I’ll get the ladder (or the Minion will).
Never question the abilities of a deer! I am not saying they can leap tall buildings in a single bound, at least I haven’t seen them do that yet. They can do many things that you wouldn’t predict, like eating jalapeno peppers from the garden, or squeezing through a 5 inch x 5 inch hole in the fence. Your garden is not safe from deer unless you make your fence out of high chicken wire. Even then, I am not sure you won’t catch one of these critters carrying wire cutters.

The deer in our neighborhood are so bold that they walk right up to the night vision camera.
